Fashion trends from hell

Femina

Velour tracksuits
Paris Hilton made these popular a few years ago and we’re still reeling from the shock. The only thing uglier than velour tracksuits are those embellished with rhinestones. Wear them only if you’re planning to get into bed and are safely out of public view.

Harem pants
They’re airy and comfortable but carrying off harem pants isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Unless you’re rapper MC Hammer, this fashion trend is best left in the pages of
The Arabian Nights.

High-waisted shorts

They were all the rage in 2012 and were spotted on celebs like Blake Lively, Emma Roberts and Miley Cyrus. Only those blessed with tiny waists and fabulously flat abs can carry off this trend and we’re not ready to go on a maple syrup diet just yet.

Bubble skirt

In a poll conducted in the UK in 2012, this was voted as one of the biggest fashion faux pas of all time, and with good reason. All that extra fabric in a bubble skirt just makes you look big and frumpy. This trend should just go back to the decade it first emerged – in the 50s – and just stay there.

Shoulder pads

A big trend in the 80s, shoulder pads were made famous by Joan Collins as Alexis Carrington in the soap
Dynasty. They accentuated the upper part of the body so that waist looked tiny. We’re sure there are better ways for a smaller waist – exercise, for instance.

Get rid of that boring LBD!

While we all love a good LBD, it has been done to death. And what if you’ve worn yours, or even its variations to more than one party? It’s time to find the perfect substitute for the little black dress. Here are a few options you can’t go wrong with.

Femina

1. A good pair of well-fitted denims
There’s nothing that a good pair of jeans can’t solve. Whether dressed up or down, jeans can make any outfit look good. And to up your style quotient, pick a pair of skinnies in a bright, bold colour. If you haven’t shaved or waxed, or are simply not feeling you’re sexiest best, slip into your best pair, team it with a curve-hugging party top and a pair of killer heels—you’ll give any girl in the shortest dress a run for her money.

Femina

2. Peplum top/skirt
One of the hottest trends that hit that fashion circuit last season, this one is here to stay. An added ruffle around the waist, whether on a top, skirt or dress, is what sets the peplum apart. A peplum top can be teamed with a short skirt, a high-waisted knee-length one, or cigarette pants. The idea is to the keep the silhouette slim. A peplum skirt goes with any top that’s well-fitted—most effective when tucked into the skirt.

Femina

3. Sheath or Shift dress
If you have that perfect hourglass figure then the sheath dress is for you. Usually a little above the knee or just grazing it, this a form-fitting dress that can take you from boardroom to bar with no added help at all. If you’re not too confident of showing off your curves, opt for a shift dress. A shift dress is generally sleeveless that hangs straight down from the shoulders and reaching the knees, making it just what you need to hide your flaws and flab. Either dress will be comfortable and appropriate no matter what kind of party you’re heading to.

15 Quick Fashion Tips for Men

Here are 15 Quick Fashion tips:

1. Fit is King – The most dramatic improvement you can make in your style is to make sure everything fits impeccably. Most guys wear clothes that are too large. Make sure everything you wear is almost hugging the shape of your body – without being tight. Bad fit is an epidemic, cure yourself.

2. Keep it simple – You want a wardrobe that looks great on you, but don’t overdo it. Don’t wear more than three pieces of jewelry or more than three colors. Don’t dress like a rock star unless you’re in a band. If you want to be flashy, a simpler but stylish look would be sporting a black striped dress shirt with a white blazer, a dark pair of jeans, a dressy belt, and your sharpest dress shoes. You could also add a flashy watch or a simple accessory like an interesting necklace, but nothing more.

3. Change the way you see casual – casual doesn’t have to be boring. Have fun with collared shirts, or take some inspiration from those who approach casual a bit differently.

4. Pay attention to your supporting pieces - Some sweaters are lean and others are big and chunky. The first rule of thumb is that your top and bottom halves need to match. If you’re wearing a big, chunky, rugged fisherman knit sweater, your bottom needs to be rugged, too. Don’t wear a fisherman’s sweater with a beautiful silk-and-wool suit pant. Instead, wear it with something as casual as cargos or jeans, or dress it up with a Harris tweed blazer.

5. Never go shopping alone – Most of the time, it’s tough to trust the sales people because they usually work for commission. Shop with a friend who will give you their honest opinion. Also, read about shopping on a budget.

6. Stay a notch above – Don’t overdo it to a fault, but dare to take some risks. It’s always better to be a little bit overdressed than underdressed in any setting. All you have to do is think about where and who you’re going to be with and just step it up one notch. But make sure you’re not better dressed than someone who is more important in a certain setting, like your boss.

7. Never underestimate the power of details – The last thing on is usually the first thing noticed. So mind the details instead of throwing together the main parts of your outfit. “Details” can include a scarf, a subtle pocket square, or the way you tie your tie knot.

8. Invest in a superb pair of shoes – If it’s one thing that women will notice, it’s your shoes. Especially how clean and sharp they look. It’s easy to wash and press the rest of your clothes to keep them looking new, but most guys disregard their shoes. Show that you’re a man of taste by getting a great pair of shoes and keeping them in pristine condition.

9. Fashion Tees with logos – When you’re going around with a big logo on your shirt, you risk looking like a walking billboard. Lose the lame Coca-Cola shirt and go for a classic v-neck tee or something artsy.

10. Disregard trends – Beware of buying something just because it’s “in” right now – stick to what you truly like. A lot of people rush to get in on the latest trend and end up with a bunch of clothes they don’t wear. It’s better to learn to build a versatile and timeless wardrobe first – then bring in your own twists with some of the new fashion. This one tip will save you so much money!

11. Don’t be a sucker for brand names –  Before you decide to purchase an item, ask yourself if you are buying it simply because of the brand name or because you love the quality and style. Ask yourself,  “Would I buy this if there was no logo on it?”

12. Continually cultivate your image – Invest more time and money into your image. Cultivate your fashion sense. Your style is a huge mode of communication, and is worth caring for as much as your education, career, and relationships. Oscar Schoffler, longtime fashion editor of Esquire once said, “Never underestimate the power of what you wear. After all, there’s just a small bit of yourself sticking out at the collar and cuff. The rest of the world sees what you drape on your frame.”

13. Ask for real feedback - Most of your friends and family aren’t going to go out of their way to tell you what looks bad. You have to ask for it. In fact, ask anyone and everyone you trust to tell you the truth. Ask your hairstylist, ask your best friend, ask your mother!

14. Upgrade your shave - Even if your fashion is golden, an unkempt beard can be an attraction killer. Achieve a perfect shave by trying a shave brush & old-fashioned double-edged razor.

15. Experiment with style – The only way you’ll really learn, is if you go out there and try new things. I make an effort to try something completely out of my comfort zone whenever I’m at a store – many times you’ll end up loving something you never thought you would. If you make mistakes, life goes on. So many guys are afraid to express themselves through their style, don’t be one of them.

Outfits for Groom's Friend

Hot tips: outfits for the groom’s friend

As the wedding season comes, you begin concentrating on your looks - irrespective of whether or not  you are getting married. Here are a few tips for your hot looks if you are attending weddings this season.

Sherwanis: Sherwanis add grace and regality to your look. Opt for  knee-length ones, with lining made from heavy material. Avoid hefty embroidery and heavy embellishments — those are only fit for the groom!

Jodhpuri suits: Wear Jodhpuri suits for a smart and comfortable look and to make a princely statement. Go for custom fit, matching trousers.

Achkans: Wear them at knee length or even below the knees. To make your Achkan look different, go for stitched stonework in place of buttons on the front, and couple with a matching pair of churidaar.

Pathani suit: Go traditional with Pathani suits. Experiment with colours like maroon, aqua blue, light beige, etc, and with intricate detailed work, varied neck styles, embroidery and thread work.

Dress like a modern day princess

Whoever said ethnic Indian jewellery goes best only with traditional outfits never saw it being worn like this. We give it a fresh, contemporary perspective that’s sure to transform you into a modern day royal heiress.

Chahat Khanna

Jewellery: Bangles and ring

The style for you

•    A really good way to wear traditional bangles and rings with a contemporary ensemble is to pair them with something that looks very suave.

•    The accessories should give an interesting contrast to your outfit.

•    Since the outfit is being kept fairly simple, your bangles and rings can be as ethnic and intricate as you wish.

•    Traditional motifs like elephants, peacocks, paisley, etc, will add great detailing to your outfit. You can add colour to your ensemble by opting for kundan work in your bangles and rings.

•    A great trend is to wear matching bangles or cuffs on both wrists
.

Devna Pani

Jewellery: Neckpieces

The style for you

•    A classic, tailored look works perfectly with traditional neckpieces, striking a good balance.

•    Let the neckpiece be the focal point of your look.

•    You can wear one statement piece in uncut diamonds, with jadau or polki; a very antique looking piece, contrasts beautifully your modern ensemble.

•    Layered neckpieces also look stunning, or you can try combining two or three neckpieces of different lengths like here.

•    The chunkier the neckpiece, the more it will stand out, so don’t be afraid to try some bold styles.

•    If you're pairing the neckpiece with a collared, button-down shirt or dress, you can button the shirt all the way up and wear the neckpiece under the collar.

Karishma Pithawala

Jewellery: Earrings

The style for you

•    When wearing long, shoulder brushing earrings, it is important to keep everything around the neck and face very bare and simple.

•    Opt for clean and simple necklines, so nothing clashes with the earrings.

•    Let the jewellery be the single source of colour in the outfit—keep everything else muted.

•    Go for big earrings with lots of motifs and detailing. Coloured chunky jewels or pearls will look great.

•    You can opt for long, lean earrings or go for something broad and chunky. Try and experiment as there are lots of great styles with beautiful traditional motifs to choose from.

•    Make sure your hair is kept away from your face, so it doesn’t hide the earrings.

Revive your work wardrobe

Femina

You can up your glam quotient and rework your work wardrobe in five inexpensive ways.
Wear your size
Very often one ends up wearing two sizes too big. Even if you don’t have the figure to flaunt your style, choose styles that will hide your flaws. Structured tunics, with flares at the hips or tops with empire cuts, or V-shaped tees are great options. Go classic when in doubt, and use smaller prints, polka dots or abstract art on your skirt or leggings. Avoid stripes or opt for them only if you have a petite frame to carry off a fitted tee in sailor-hued stripes. Capris are good too.
Go cotton
Invest in a mix of cotton kurtas or linen pants for the summer onslaught. Go with minimal embroidery or bling, but splurge on colour. Team with exotic footwear in pop pastels or metallic hues. Hues like emerald green, nectarine, African violet, lemon zest, poppy red or Monaco blue are hot this year.
Accessories
Simple and small things like the colour or style of your watch strap, the scarf you wear or the dupatta you sport will give your mundane look a big lift. Strappy sandals or wedge heels in bright hues that match your attire would be good add-ons.
Hair and makeup
No point wearing something really glam if you are having a bad hair day. Use simple measures like wet hair or braiding long hair to achieve a different style from the daily. Carry moisturiser and sunscreen at all times, as well as your nude lipstick and kohl pencil. Dab these on before a meeting with the boss to look fresh and alert.
Buy clothes only after you try them on
Very often you see a vibrant set of palazzos hanging on the street, but when you go home and wear them they do nothing to your body shape. Trousers are always good to try for the way they make your butt look, and for that perfect fit. So do a few blouses—you may like them at a certain length or a cut.

Rocking the Indian look!

You don’t need to show skin or be dressed glamorously always to look sensual and show stopper material. And you should definitely not underestimate the oomph and elegance dressing in traditional garb can bring to your persona. Here we take a look at Bollywood divas that stepped out in their traditional best and totally rocked the show.

parineeti

Parineeti Chopra
Dressed in a traditional lehenga in a lovely bright hue, Parineeti Chopra made a truly gorgeous show stopper at a recent fashion show. She went simple with her hair, low on accessories and light on make-up – doing just the perfect thing with a bright attire like this one.

katrina

Katrina Kaif
Cream and gold saree with silver embellishments and Katrina’s got a winner here. She looks totally stunning in this saree and the minimal, yet blingy earrings and bracelet do total justice to the attire, with the low neck corset blouse adds to her sex appeal.

urmila

Urmila Matondkar
She may be off the big screen for sometime now, but Urmila still manages to attract attention at events and social dos for her wonderful fashion sense. She wore this beautiful gown, Indian-ised with the beautiful dupatta and the design, as she walked the ramp at a recent fashion show. She was the showstopper, and played her role to perfection.

genelia

Genelia D’Souza
Call it a long, flowy gown with a ghagra kind of feel to it or a ghagra-blouse with a gown like cut – Gene carries the look perfectly in this black and gold attire. And how can we not talk about her hairdo? The fringes look cute on the actress and she has done the right thing by going with minimal makeup and no accessories.

anushka

Anushka Sharma
This is perhaps the one time when Anushka will get away with not being tagged as ‘skinny’. The actress has chosen a flowy anarkali which brings some bulk to her size zero frame. The ruby red lips and the dark nail colour add a vintage elegance which you will find hard to fall for.

Your nail colour and you!

Often when selecting a nail colour, we don’t give it much thought and just go with what we feel at that moment. Today yellow may seem attractive and tomorrow, you may want to switch to a purple. But have you ever wondered why? Find out what the following shades say about you.

beauty

Red: Bold, daring and brimming with confidence; you don’t shy away from taking risks and you indulge yourself silly when you win. Red signifies several aspects of your personality—you are outgoing, dramatic and passionate. Having an opinion is mandatory. But you can also get too argumentative at times. And, you hate losing. You are armed with an attractive personality, so seducing come easy to you. You like to take charge of things and you enjoy the spotlight. Red, in many ways, points to beauty that evokes nostalgia. If you’re suddenly craving to paint your nails a luscious red, it means you now know what being sexy means.

Yellow: Yellow undoubtedly signifies that you are full of sunshine. You are a happy person and you like to spread the cheer. You like to make a statement with your bright canary yellow talons. You are full of life, so you take pride in being the cynosure of all eyes. You easily outshine others with your extroverted nature. Yellow has a supremely energising and positive vibe, which also reflects your inner optimism.

Green: You are at peace with yourself and your surroundings. Modesty and sincerity colour your personality, and being gentle comes easy to you. Needless to say, you feel one with nature. You often crave for a trek up lush mountains or doing your bit for earth’s conservation. If you could, you’d live in a tent, in the forest. You believe in exuding power through inner strength. Being loud is not your thing. The shade green also points to your dynamism.

beauty

Blue: You enjoy being calm, like the clear blue waters, but that doesn’t mean you are monotonous. You are fun and experimental. Like black, blue is not for the faint-hearted. It requires a certain attitude to sport blue on your nails. They say the hottest flames burn blue, so it’s not an option to take you for granted. You are born to be unique in whatever you do and you are quite the trendsetter. There is, of course, a well-hidden side to you—you are compassionate and caring and you will go to any length to help your loved ones.

Purple:
If you’ve always felt drawn to this shade, you know you like to be treated like a princess and purple makes you feel like one. It’s a complex shade, so those wearing it are usually very creative. You are inherently artistic and are attracted to the bohemian life. Your wittiness can sometimes verge on sarcasm, but that doesn’t make you insensitive; you do it only when you see no way out. You are a well-bred, refined personality and you take pride in your sophistication. That air of quiet confidence you carry is the envy of people around you.

Pink:
For as long you can remember, Sex AndThe City has been your favourite film, and chances are, you probably worship Sarah Jessica Parker. Being fashionable is obligatory. Your spunky nature is reflected in your femininity. You are cutesy, but in a sweet way. You may come across as a timid soul, but you are not a wallflower. You stand up for yourself at the right time and the right place—in your own way, of course—and that makes you an endearing person. Girly, flirty and funny could well be synonyms for you.

beauty

Gold: Glamorous and sultry—an absolute stunner. You probably get these compliments often. You like to shine, pun intended. For you, being beautiful means appearing in glitzy or blingy attire. Showing off is in your DNA and you just love to hog the spotlight. But you are a genuinely warm and generous person, when moving in social circles. You often tend to be the life of a party, and conversations with you are always engaging and interesting.

Black: Black nail paint has been associated with evil Goth and vampires for a long time. But they are not tenets written in stone. You simply like to stand out in a crowd. Yes, you are mysterious and can be rebellious at times, but not without good reason. You are edgy and a risk-taker, and you speak your mind. Most of all, you are a strong woman and always will be.

Neon: Neon shades are the latest rage, be it in your iPhone covers, outfits, nails, curtains, crockery, et al. You are hip and out to make a statement. Paris Hilton could very well be your muse. You love to dress up in fuchsias and go partying, and you could certainly party all night, without a pause. Everyone wants to be seen with you because you are bubbly and cool at the same time. Your energy is infectious and you like to live in the moment.

Gradient: You like shaking things up. You love to flaunt two to three shades on your manicured nails and often do your own nail art. You are a very patient person and perseverance is second nature to you. You take your time making decisions; until you are satisfied it is the right one. But you might come across as slightly complicated. No one can ever guess what’s going on in your mind and you don’t easily warm up to strangers. But once you’ve broken the ice, you are all set to mingle.

Fashion face-off

Imagine bumping into another person wearing the same dress as you at an event? You may live with it, but now imagine the same scene with two celebrities. Awkward!

SHOPPERS LIFESTYLE
It's never pretty to be caught in public wearing the same outfit as someone else. A classic example of how too much of a designer can be a bad thing is evident here. Both these not-so-size-zero ladies seem to favour Ranna Gill, but we can't say either of them made this dress work. Huma Quereshi's simple hairband-y look saved her from being at the bottom of the barrel, while Poonam Dhillon's over-accessorizing as always, had her volunteer for a fashion police lineup.

SHOPPERS LIFESTYLE
Different designers but the same idea. It was red lace for both Evelyn Sharma and Deepika Padukone. We all know who the clear winner here is. It's Deepika, duh! Evelyn's creased gown was a bit of a lacklustre moment for us.

Deepika Padukone dons a daring Prabal Gurung number for a special night out. The cutout dress is almost molded onto her.Zoe Saldana favours the same designer but somehow makes the bold dress look rather bland.

Kate Moss strips off for ad

The British supermodel has been unveiled as the new face and body of self-tan brand St. Tropez. A new video released by the brand shows Moss behind the scenes on the campaign shoot and waxing lyrical about the benefits of the brand, which she trusts to give her a natural looking tan.

That's what people want. They don't want something orange.
The 39-year-old model is a big fan of summer -- "I love hanging out in my garden and not having to put layers and layers of clothes on, and swimming in the sea." Michelle Feeney, CEO of PZ Cussons Beauty, owners of St. Tropez, was excited about their new brand representative: "it gives us the ultimate stamp of approval on the quality of our products. Kate epitomises St.Tropez's naturally glamorous approach to self-tanning and is a long-time advocate of the brand."

The company is also launching a publicity drive on Twitter, encouraging fans to tweet whenever they're off on vacation with the #OFFTOSTTROPEZ handle. The brand will send out Riviera-chic content and prizes to those who play along, while one lucky follower and a friend will win their own summer trip to Saint Tropez, France.

Now available in 18 countries around the world, St. Tropez was first launched in 1996. Croydon-born model Moss is one of fashion's biggest names, with more than 20 years of campaigns and runway shows under her belt.

Sonam vs Aishwarya vs Mallika: Who wore it best?

SHOPPERS LIFESTYLE
My oh my was the black and neutral shade combo a hit at the 2013 Cannes red carpet with our Bollywood divas! India’s most popular fashionista Sonam Kapoor wore a stunning creation by designer Shehla Khan with black detailing. The intricate work was also seen on our global star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Elie Saab gown. And the shades were also donned by sex symbol Mallika Sherawat in a dress by Dolce & Gabbana.

5 best hair accessories

5 best hair accessories

They are the bane of our lives—the bad hair days. While there is no escaping it, here are some hair accessories to mask your hair and help you save face. It is time to pull out your best accessorising tricks from your sleeve and nail down an attention-grabbing style.

Femina

Head scarfs and wraps: Head scarfs are a stylish addition to any wardrobe, from casual to sophisticated. This hair accessory fits securely and is an easy alternative to wigs, hats and traditional scarves. It can be worn with an open scarf like look or tucked in back to cover your head completely. Ensure that you pick the right material so that the head wrap keeps your head comfortably cool and are soft to touch.
A bejewelled hairband: This hair accessory will definitely help you shine out in the crowd. Embrace your individual style identity and sport a gorgeous hair clip or an ultra-sophisticated headband. It is the answer to your prayer if you are in a need of a quick glam fix for your boring look. Regardless of your hair length and personality, these hairbands are armed with rhinestones and sequins to divert attention away from your messy locks.

Femina

A headband: The beginning of headbands can be attributed to the ancient Greeks who wore hair wreaths or early 20th century women who believed that tight pressure around the forehead could relieve or prevent headaches. But with time, these headbands have only gotten more sophisticated—from lace, crochet, ribbons and cute bows to exotic fabrics and decorated with feathers. Play up your allure with these head accessories.
Ponytail holder: One of the all-time greatest summer, lazy day, athletic hairstyles or best way to mask a bad  hair day is to tie it up. Yes ladies, the ponytail holder could be your best friend. Ponytails look great on everyone, they keep the hair out of your face, accentuate your features and a high ponytail is a big fashion trend. So get a ponytail holder that is colourful—this will work great for a casual do. Or a more sophisticated one for a more formal outing.

Femina

A hat or cap: With summer kicking in, stylish hats or caps for women are all the rage—they are a great, inexpensive and effective form of UV protection for your skin and your hair. They only take a second to throw on, and they not only mask a bad hair day, but can also accessorise a casual look. Bright, flattering summer colours next to your face can act just like makeup, making you look great with very little effort, though they won’t work at a formal event.

Retro look: Dos and Don'ts

Retro curls and sun-kissed skin are safe bets for any occasion. We list out looks that work and those that don’t.

sridevi

DO UBER GLAM
Sridevi
Hair:
Sridevi channels old Hollywood glamour in this retro faux bob. It accentuates her jawline and is a welcome break from her usually casual hairdos. Lips: She nails the oxblood lip trend with élan without screaming for attention. Face: Her face has got a great balance of textures. When you go this dark on the lips, it’s better to leave your cheeks bare, but she pulls it off with this colour.

neha bashin

DON’T OPT FOR ONE COLOUR
Neha Bhasin
Hair:
We get what Neha is trying to do, but it’s just not working. Matching your hair colour to your dress is not the way to go. Lips: Red is probably her favourite colour. Ours too—but not in combination with all the reds from the spectrum. Face: The rest of the makeup is not as much of a letdown, barring those too touched eyebrows.

yukta

DON’T BE LAZY
Yukta Mookhey
Eyes:
What happened to former Miss World Yukta Mookhey? Looks like she gave away her makeup skills along with the crown. Sky blue eyeshadow on an almost white base complements her jacket, but does nothing for her. Face: She should have at least made an effort to match her neck and décolletage. Hair: Her hair deserved a little more volume. A partial bouffant or a high ponytail would have helped a little.
